Why Use an Aircraft Ground Power Unit?

Why Use an Aircraft Ground Power Unit?Aviation has become a pretty big industry all around the world. The more and more airplanes we see, we start to see more emissions from the fuel that is being used to run all these airplanes.  The government regulations have changed the way emissions are handled.

Why use an aircraft ground power unit?

Not only does it help out on emissions but it is also saving the airline or the pilot of a civilian aircraft money on fuel costs. The airlines have urged the ground crew employees to use aircraft ground power units versus using APU's (auxiliary power unit) as they consume jet fuel tremendously.  Aircraft ground power units are efficient power generators and use diesel fuel instead of aviation fuel.  That is one of the reasons why to use an aircraft ground power unit.

Why use an aircraft ground power unit?

The power that starts the engines of an aircraft is 24V, 40A/h lead-acid battery or from an external 28V direct current source such as an aircraft ground power unit.  While the plane has landed, the engines shut down and the ground power unit takes over to feed the aircraft with the power that is needed.  An APU is still used 45 percent of the time when supplemental power is needed.  Saving millions of dollars a year to the airlines involved or thousands of dollars to the civilian pilot is just another reason why to use an aircraft ground power unit.  The aircraft ground power unit will do the same as an APU to provide electrical power for lighting, heating and cooling while the aircraft is on the ground but will save so much money running on diesel fuel versus running on aviation fuel.Noise pollution is a good reason why to use an aircraft ground power unit.

Why use an aircraft ground power unit?

Another reason would be to reduce any noise pollution. An aircraft running it's engines sitting on the ground is astronomically loud. Many airports do not even allow aircraft to use APU's because of the noise that is still involved.

An aircraft ground power unit will be the small vehicle or trailer that is seen near where the aircraft parks when it lands.  They can be powered by diesel fuel and sometimes they are all electric units that can be powered off and on from some sort of electrical grid.  There are basically two types of electrical aircraft ground power units with one being 28 volt DC current and the other one would be an AC unit. An aircraft ground power unit is recommended to be used for both the starting of an aircraft and servicing of the aircraft.

Why use an aircraft ground power unit?

When the engines or even an APU is started on an aircraft, the battery will have an enormous strain put on it.  An aircraft ground power unit will eliminate this problem as it is now powering the aircraft.   If a battery on an aircraft is not sufficiently charged, the starting of an aircraft engine may suffer unnecessary wear and tear and sometimes even become damaged.

Saving the aircraft battery life is one reason why you would use an aircraft ground power unit. These are just a few of the reasons why to use an aircraft ground power unit but a TEMCo specialized engineer can explain more of the reasons. TEMCo has been in business since 1968 providing electrical solutions to thousands of applications worldwide. They are the experts in large industrial power solutions.
